Delivering a decarbonised Peterhead

25 Oct 2024

In March 2022, SSE and Equinor submitted a planning application to the Energy Consents Unit seeking consent for a new gas-fired power station equipped with carbon capture at SSE's site in Aberdeenshire.

Peterhead Carbon Capture Power Station would connect into the CO2 transport and storage infrastructure being developed through the Acorn Project.

This is in clear recognition of the need for low carbon flexible power to support a renewables-led system, as recognised by the Climate Change Committee, the Scottish Government and UK Government.

As planning policy has evolved in this space, SSE and Equinor have confirmed with the Scottish Government's Energy Consents Unit that they will be undertaking additional environmental assessments to align with new expectations, specifically in relation to the assessment of upstream emissions.

SSE and Equinor will submit this information to the Energy Consents Unit in due course. To ensure full transparency, this information will also be made publicly available.

We published an FAQ on our Peterhead Carbon Capture Power Station development in September 2024.
