SSE’s commitment to the Humber was on full show last week at the official opening for the new Keadby 2 Power Station.
The plant – which is the most efficient of its type in Europe – entered commercial operations in March following a four-and-a-half year build programme.
To mark the milestone, SSE Thermal welcomed more than 100 stakeholders to the site in North Lincolnshire to discover more about Keadby 2 and our future plans for Keadby and the wider region.
Attendees heard directly from SSE's Alistair Phillips-Davies and Catherine Raw, with both outlining the critical importance of flexible generation, the safety record during construction and SSE’s plans to develop carbon capture and hydrogen technology at the site in the future.
Partnership was a central theme of the day, with Christian Bruch of Siemens Energy – our key construction and technology partner – celebrating the collaboration which was so crucial to the project’s success.
Graham Stuart, a local MP and also Minister of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, delivered a video address where he outlined how Keadby 2 can support the transition to low-carbon power generation, while Martin Vickers, another local MP, officially opened the station.
Attendees also had the opportunity to meet several graduates and apprentices, with projects such as Keadby 2 providing long-term career opportunities while supporting a just transition in the Humber.
Catherine Raw, Managing Director of SSE Thermal, said: “Keadby 2 is a landmark project for SSE. Not only is it one of the world’s most efficient gas-fired power stations, it also serves as a bridge to a low-carbon future as we bring forward carbon capture and hydrogen projects at the site.
“The official opening was a chance to celebrate Keadby 2 and the people who made it possible. Built through the pandemic, safety was at the heart of the project and I want to personally thank everyone involved in bringing Keadby 2 to life.”
