The Ferrybridge Multifuel 1 facility, jointly owned by SSE and Wheelabrator Technologies, has celebrated a major milestone - successfully processing one million tonnes of fuel since commencing operations.
The plant, which became fully commercially operational in July 2015, uses waste derived fuel to generate clean, sustainable electricity which is then used to power up to 160,000 homes.
The post-recycled, waste derived fuel used, which is pre-processed off site, would otherwise have been sent to landfill. A twenty four hour operation at the plant supports 47 full-time roles and construction of a second multifuel plant has already started next door.
Colin Drew, Ferrybridge Multifuel Plant Manager, said: “One million tonnes of residual waste processed is a key milestone in the operational life of the plant, a milestone of which the whole team are proud.
“This facility is highly efficient and is successfully diverting hundreds of thousands of tonnes of waste from landfill each year.”
