Women in Engineering Day – Heather Fleming profile

23 Jun 2016

National Women in Engineering Day (#NWED2016) aims to raise the profile of women in engineering and focus attention on the exciting career opportunities available to girls. We’ve asked three female employees to take us through what path they followed to reach this stage in their careers and what they’d like to see to encourage more young girls into STEM roles.

Heather Fleming was always interested in STEM subjects so jumped at the opportunity to start an apprenticeship. Now, working for our Networks business as Head of Embedded Generation, she looks after eight different power plants on remote Scottish islands. Heather would like to see even more role models in schools talking to young girls and assuring them there are plenty of careers in STEM jobs for women.

The main theme for 2016’s National Women in Engineering Day is #RaisingProfiles and to celebrate we’ve picked out just three of our female role models, however there are many more.

We currently have a number of vacancies within our apprenticeship programme in the south of England. For more information please click here or visit our careers page to find out more about the exciting roles within SSE.
