Staff from SSE’s Great Island power station swing into action in Co. Wexford
29 Jan 2016
Employees from SSE’s Great Island CCGT power station in Co. Wexford took a break from their day jobs yesterday to help the Duncannon Village Renewal Committee with maintenance work for the local community.
Through its Be the Difference programme, SSE gives every employee the opportunity to take a day away from their usual schedule and donate their time to a charity or community group of their choice.
The staff braved tricky weather conditions on the day to work on two different projects. One group cleared an unsightly area of hedgerow and a wire fence close to a block of holiday apartments, while others cleaned the local playground and tidied up litter at the beach.
Philip Wallace from the Duncannon Village Renewal Committee, said: “I would like to thank the SSE staff for their hard work, particularly in clearing the hedgerow, which we would not have been able to complete on our own. The residents and visitors in Duncannon will really benefit from the great work carried out on the day, especially the children who now have a shiny, clean playground to enjoy.”
Pat McGovern, Process Support Manager at SSE’s Great Island CCGT, commented: “Thanks to everyone who volunteered and made the day so successful, despite the tough conditions. Our volunteers made a visible and positive difference for the community in Duncannon. It was a great event by all accounts, but perhaps we’ll arrange our next community volunteering day for the summer months!”
