A landmark was recently achieved at SSE's Ferrybridge and Great Island power stations when both thermal sites reached half a million man hours without a Lost Time Reportable Incident.
Since taking on construction of Great Island in 2012, SSE has implemented considerable safety upgrades on the site of the 464MW CCGT, with a particular focus on mitigating the risk of explosions through the adoption of a very stringent ATEX safety programme.
John McDonnell, Great Island Project Safety Manager commented: "This is a fantastic achievement for everyone involved with the construction of Great Island. We've mitigated a number of safety challenges during construction and reduced the incident rate on site to 0.21, well below SSE's expected rate of 0.30, and the Irish, European and global construction incident rates."
SSE's CCGT development at Great Island in the South-East of Ireland is on course to be fully commissioned this Spring, with capacity to export 431MW on to the electricity network.
