SSE opened up the doors at Peterhead power station last week to almost 100 local people for a tour of the site to find out more about the station and the future proposals for a carbon capture and storage (CCS) project at Peterhead.
Four tours were bussed to the site after a presentation on the CCS plans at the Buchan Braes Hotel in Boddam. At the station each tour group was joined by a power station guide and a CCS expert for the walking tour which took in the existing station infrastructure and outlined the differences the CCS project would make.
SSE is supporting Shell who are developing the world’s first full-scale gas CCS project. Up to 10 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions could be captured from the power station and transported by pipeline offshore to Shell’s existing Goldeneye reservoir for long-term storage.
The project is one of two CCS demonstration projects selected by the UK Government to enter a Front End Engineering Design (FEED) study as part of their CCS commercialisation competition.
George Clements, SSE’s CCS Development Manager, said: “The tours at Peterhead Power Station were a real success and a great opportunity for us to demonstrate our CCS proposals. It was really encouraging to see over 100 people of all ages visiting the station and asking us lots of questions about how it operates and what the CCS project would mean for the site.”
