Fiddler’s Ferry trainee Luke Fearnley has recently completed a four year apprenticeship programme at the SSE coal-fired power plant near Widnes.
Luke, 20, from Warrington, is one of the company's 650 apprentices country-wide. Coal-fired power stations like Fiddler's Ferry continue to have a significant part to play in maintaining secure supplies of electricity and ensuring the most cost-effective portfolio of fuels, making properly trained recruits ever-important.
Luke said: "I began my SSE apprenticeship in September 2010, the first two years I spent studying at TTE, and during my time there I completed a B-TEC National Certificate and also learned the basic skills necessary to be able to work on site.
"After I had completed the two years I then came to Fiddler’s Ferry for a further two years of training. Whilst here I have completed a level 3 QCF Diploma in Control and Instrumentation and have also successfully passed a Higher National Certificate in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
"I have thoroughly enjoyed my apprenticeship and especially my time at Fiddler’s Ferry and would definitely recommend TTE to others interested in the energy industry.”
Peter Woosey, Engineering Manager at Fiddler’s Ferry, presented Luke with his certificate.
Peter said: "As a responsible employer SSE is fully aware of the enormous benefit of investing properly in the talent of tomorrow. Luke has shown great aptitude and dedication during his studies and should be very proud of his achievements.
“Apprenticeships like this are also good news for the local economy in Cheshire as young people stay in the area because they have a skilled, sustainable job.”
In recognition of Luke’s hard work he was offered a permanent position at Fiddler’s Ferry Power Station and now works within the Repair and Maintenance Team.
